Nagano Saemon (died 1582) was a Japanese samurai and a retainer to the Uesugi clan during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Service to the Uesugi clan[edit | edit source]

By 1566, Saemon studied with Kamiizumi Nobutsuna as they both served the Uesugi clan, under the daimyō Uesugi Kenshin. Both men were part of the Sixteen Spears and seen as top students. However, when the Takeda clan besieged Minowa Castle, Nobutsuna defected to their side, much to Saemon's dismay. Angered at this betrayal, Saemon became mortal rivals with the Takeda clan and sought vengeance.[1]

Life as a rōnin and death[edit | edit source]

By 1582, Saemon had become renowned as a master of the yumi but continued to hold animosity towards the Takeda clan, taking any chance he got to eliminate their warriors. Takeda Motoaki, a member of the clan in Wakasa and a secret Shinbakufu member, sent his men to find and kill the samurai, but they all fell to Saemon's bow. Leaving a trail of dead bodies, he found himself stationed at Sotomo Cove, where he stood ready for any intruder.[1]

When fellow Nobutsuna student and Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke came, he was nearly killed by Nagamo's arrow. Yasuke asked to learn the way of the bow, to which Saemon reluctantly agreed to teach him but challenged the samurai to a duel. Saemon ultimately lost and, mortally wounded by an arrow to the chest, used his dying breath to express his loyalty to his late lord, Uesugi Kenshin, and ask for his forgiveness. Admiring Saemon's integrity, Yasuke bid him peace in death and acquired the bow Blood Rain from his personal effects before leaving.[1]

Historically, there is mention of a "Nagano Zaemon" being part of the "Sixteen Spears of the Nagano House."[2]
