The Mountain Yamabushi was a Japanese soldier under Oda Nobunaga who posed as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.

Biography

After the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi, in order to find and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who survived the war. However, as the time passed, their mission led the soldiers to become more deranged and bloodthirsty, hurting any innocent civilians along their path.[1]

By 1582, yamabushi Genpaku met with Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and asked them to help him rid the country of these false monks. Following Genpaku's lead, they traveled to Kawachi Kaza-ana Cave and found multiple bodies, including the Mountain Yamabushi imposter. They later retrieved a message, which dictated the imposter's twenty-nine kills for Nobunaga and his last effort to kill the woman in the cave, from his personal effects.[1]

Behind the scenes

Coincidentally, this Yamabushi imposter happened to be another victim of one of the targets, the "Yuki-onna", of the side mission, "The Yokai."[2]
