The Tenshō Iga War (1579–1581) comprised the two invasions of Iga by Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period.[1][2][3] First initiated in 1579[4] as a poorly-enacted campaign under Nobunaga's second son Nobukatsu,[5] his army fell into an ambush set by Iga shinobi.[3] Emboldened by their success, the Igans rallied allies. Furious that his son had foolishly left the job half-done, allowing it to grow to become a larger problem, Nobunaga resolved to crush the resistance and personally took command of the army.[6] He met with much greater success when he returned in 1581 with his new retainer Yasuke, razing down settlements across the province and all but destroying the Iga.[4] In a twist of fate, one of the surviving ninja, Fujibayashi Naoe, later joined forces with Yasuke to pursue common goals.[7]
