Oda clan troops attacking Iga in 1581

The Tenshō Iga War (1579–1581) comprised the two invasions of Iga by Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period.[1][2][3] Nobunaga attacked Iga in 1579,[4] but his army fell into an ambush set by Iga shinobi.[3] Nobunaga met with much greater success when he returned in 1581 with his new retainer Yasuke, razing down settlements across the province and all but destroying the Iga.[4] In a twist of fate, one of the surviving ninja, Fujibayashi Naoe, later joined forces with Yasuke to pursue common goals.[5]

Behind the scenes

The Second Tenshō Iga War is a historical event that will feature in the upcoming 2025 video game Assassin's Creed: Shadows.[2][4][5]
