The assault on Miki Castle took place at Miki Castle, Japan in 1582 during the late Sengoku period. It was fought between a group of conscripts aided by the Kakushiba ikki, and the Shinbakufu member Bessho Harumasa with his Bessho clan forces.
Prelude[edit | edit source]
In 1578, Oda Nobunaga's commander Toyotomi Hideyoshi attacked the Mōri clan in the Chūgoku provinces, which led Nobunaga's ally Bessho Nagaharu to help the Mōri by shutting himself in Miki Castle and going against Nobunaga. As a result, Hideyoshi started a two-year siege of Miki Castle. This onslaught caused Negaharu to lose supplies and nourishment for his men. In the end, Nagaharu, his wife, and his younger brother Tomoyuki committed seppuku in order to save the lives of the castle's soldiers.[1]
In 1582, after Nobunaga's death at Honnō-ji,[2] Bessho Harumasa, a retainer of the Bessho clan, and his forces easily took back Miki Castle from the occupying Oda forces and kept Hideyoshi's men at bay. However, this act prompted theKakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke to intervene.[3] With the help of the former commander Nakamura Tadashige, the duo retained the help of the rōnin Koshiro[4] and merchant Hiromichi[5] in their plan to attack Harumasa.
The assault on Miki Castle[edit | edit source]
While the conscripts under Koshiro attacked the castle, Naoe and Yasuke enacted their own plans, with Naoe secretly entering the grounds to eliminate its gunmen who aimed at Koshiro's men, and Yasuke storming the grounds to personally deal with Harumasa, surrounded by his men and his second-in-command, The Tsuno. Insulting him over his ties with Nobunaga, Harumasa accepted Yasuke's challenge to fight over the truth. The Tsuno soon offered to be his master's proxy to duel the samurai, to which Harumasa accepted. Leaving the Tsuno to fight Yasuke, Harumasa headed towards the castle's unfinished tenshu to await the Tsuno after his victory.[6]
Ultimately, Yasuke managed to defeat Harumasa's men and kill the Tsuno. Soon, Naoe and Yasuke had Koshiro lead the conscripts back to Tadashige while the duo headed towards the tenshu. There, they confronted and defeated Harumasa. On his knees, Naoe interrogated Harumasa about his plans with the Tatsu and the knowledge about a box that the Shinbakufu had stolen from her. However, Harumasa stated that he had no idea and only allied himself with the Tatsu for his support against the Oda clan in Harima and never cared about his leader's ambitions. Arguing over their viewpoints, Harumasa ended the conversation saying freedom was a coward's way. Done with his retorts, Naoe signaled for Yasuke to execute Harumasa. Harumasa thanked him for a quick death and Yasuke beheaded him with his ōdachi, ending his plans for Harima.[6]
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
After news spread of Harumasa's death, his subordinate commander Genzaburo learned of Koshiro's role in the attack. He thus ordered his 4-man elite unit to kill Koshiro at Kyokaiji Temple. Koshiro survived the assassination attempt but was severely wounded in the process. Naoe happened to arrive at the temple moments later and Koshiro recounted the events to her. She promised to eliminate his attackers in his stead, and after killing the squad members, she confronted Genzaburo at Zuiganji Temple and dueled him. With his death, the threats ended against Koshiro's life.[7]
