Akechi Mitsuyoshi (1569 - 1582) was a Japanese samurai and the eldest son of Akechi Mitsuhide.

Biography

In 1582, Mitsuyoshi and his sister Hosokawa Tama were under the care and discretion of the Portuguese Templar Nuno Caro, who influenced their father Mitsuhide to overthrow Lord Oda Nobunaga.[2] After their father's death,[3] Mitsuyoshi was taken prisoner at Kameyama Castle by Caro, who used his life as leverage to force Tama to join the Templars and supply them with silver from the Tada Silver Mine.[2]

While there, Mitsuyoshi had his katana stolen by one of Caro's men, Baltazar, and was taken to the lower corridor of the castle. Soon, he was found by the Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke, who introduced himself and revealed that he came to rescue him at Tama's behest. Relieved, Mitsuyoshi stated that they could not go to Atago Shrine yet as Baltazar held his katana. Yasuke promised to retrieve the sword and escorted Mitsuyoshi out of the castle before instructing him to head to the shrine.[4]

Waiting at the shrine, Mitsuyoshi eventually saw Yasuke arrive with his father's katana before they both went to meet with Tama, who was elated to see her younger brother safe. When Tama revealed that they would be leaving the province, Mitsuyoshi received their father's katana from Yasuke and placed it onto the shrine, where Mitsuhide used to come to pray before every battle. Laying the katana in its proper place, Mitsuyoshi gave his father one last farewell before leaving with Tama.[4]

Behind the scenes

Historically, Akechi Mitsuyoshi committed seppuku on 4 July 1582, after losing a battle against daimyō Nakagawa Kiyohide and Justo Takayama in the western Ōmi Province. This occured only two days after his father's own defeat at the Battle of Yamazaki.[1]
