Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (上泉 信綱, c. 1508 – c. 1582) was a Japanese samurai who founded and led the Shinkage-ryū school of combat during the Sengoku period.[1] Throughout his teaching career, he trained many individuals including Marume Nagayoshi, Yagyū Munetoshi, Yuki no Kata, Hōzōin In'ei, Nagano Saemon, and Asari Nobutane.[2]

Biography

By the early 1580s, Nobutsuna was based at the Azuchi Castle in Ōmi, where he developed a rivalry with the Sanada-ryu school founded by Sanada Masatoyo. He later took in the African retainer Diogo as his student on Oda Nobunaga's orders, training him become a powerful samurai.[3]

Behind the scenes

Historically, Kamiizumi Nobutsuna died in either 1572 or 1577,[1] but in Assassin's Creed: Shadows he is still alive as late as 1581.
