Baltazar (died 1582) was a Portuguese soldier serving under the Portuguese Templar Nuno Caro during the 16th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1582, Baltazar, along with Caro's men, was placed on duty to guard the captive Akechi Mitsuyoshi at Kameyama Castle to ensure his sister Hosokawa Tama's compliance with Caro's demand for silver. With Mitsuyoshi as his captive, Baltazar soon took the Akechi family's katana away from Mitsuyoshi and left the boy in his cell while he stationed himself in the castle's courtyard.[1]

However, the Kakushiba ikki member and samurai Yasuke came and freed Mitsuyoshi to allow him to meet his sister Tama at the Atago Shrine. While escorting him out of the castle, the young Akechi mentioned that Baltazar had stolen his family's katana, to which Yasuke promised to retrieve it. Once Mitsuyoshi was safe, Yasuke returned to the castle and confronted Baltazar and his fellow guards in the courtyard, ultimately killing them. He then acquired the Akechi clan katana and an amulet, the Howl of the Dragon, from Baltazar's personal effects.[1]
