Hozoin In'ei was a Japanese samurai and master of the kanabō during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Under Nobutsuna's tutelage[edit | edit source]

In his youth, Hozoin In'ei studied under Kamiizumi Nobutsuna. In time, he became one of Nobutsuna's oldest friends and garnered a reputation as a wise and patient master of the kanabō. He eventually left Nobutsuna's side and ventured towards Yamato.[2]

Life as a protector[edit | edit source]

By 1582, Hozoin served as a retainer to a local daimyō in Yamato. However, when frequent bandit attacks became a serious issue, he was told to stand down and leave the people to them. In response, Hozoin decided to train the locals so they could fight back, and personally killed numerous bandits, disobeying his lord's orders. While he was reconstructing a statue at Choanji Yakushido, he was approached by fellow Nobutsuna student and Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke, who came to learn the way of the kanabō.[2]

While he posed the same dilemma to Yasuke, Hozoin accepted the duel nonetheless. As they dueled with their kanabōs, Hozoin began divulging pieces of advice while sparring. He was eventually bested by Yasuke, whom he told about how he had disobeyed his lord's wishes in the dilemma mentioned. Although he stated that he was ready to face the consequences, Yasuke admitted to having dealt with the bandits' leader, thus stopping any repercussions from happening. Thanking Yasuke and giving his last words of advice, Hozoin gifted the kanabō, the Phantom Fist, to Yasuke before they parted ways.[2]
