The Shadow Yamabushi was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he masked himself as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Following the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi. Their mission was to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who had survived the war. However, all these soldiers became more hazardous and violent, killing any innocents in their way.[1]

In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku spoke with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these false monks. Both members agreed to help by hunting down the perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead, they investigated the Otogi Pass in Iga and found a yamabushi standing atop a cliff overlooking Kasuga Shrine. Arriving at his camp, they confronted the imposter and assassinated him. They then retrieved a kusarigama, Yomi's Retribution, from his personal effects.[1]
