They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me The Mountain Yamabushi.

This article is about a subject that lacks an official name and is known only by its nickname, title, or alias.

The Mountain Yamabushi (died 1582) was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he posed as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

After the Tenshō Iga War, Oda Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi, in order to find and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who had survived the war. However, as the time passed, their mission led the soldiers to become more deranged and bloodthirsty, hurting any innocent civilians along their path.[1]

In 1582, the yamabushi Genpaku met with the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and asked them to help him rid the country of these false monks. Following Genpaku's lead, the pair traveled to the Kawachi Kaza-ana Cave and found multiple bodies, including the Mountain Yamabushi. They then retrieved a message from his personal effects, which dictated the imposter's twenty-nine kills for Nobunaga and his last effort to eliminate the woman in the cave.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Coincidentally, this yamabushi imposter happened to be one of the many victims of the "Yuki-onna", one of the targets in the memory "The Yokai."[2]
