Imai Sōkun (今井 宗薫, 1552 – 1627) was a Japanese tea master and a merchant overseeing the weapons trade in Sakai during the late 16th century. The son of Imai Sōkyū, who was tea master to Oda Nobunaga,[1] Sōkun later succeeded his father in the business.[2]

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1582, Sōkun and his father received a visit from the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, posing as a trader. After Naoe, who introduced herself as Sanuki and showed her forged but authentic-looking contracts to him, Sōkun praised Naoe's boldness and asked him to walk with him in the town. Along the way, Sōkun answered questions from Naoe in regards to his father and their business dealings with Nobunaga.[1]

After checking on a merchant who had borrowed money from his father, Sōkun led Naoe to his office, where he offered her sake. When Naoe asked about being invited for tea ceremonies instead, Sōkun agreed to ask his father for the arrangements. As Naoe then asked about a gathering of women with an interest in the teppō trade, Sōkun agreed it might be worth proposing the idea to his father. He then told Naoe to educate herself in tea etiquette and to acquire a kosode for the ceremony before meeting him at their family house.[1]
