Kōga

Kōga was a region in Ōmi, Japan that shared its borders with the Iga province.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1573, Kōgan daimyō Rokkaku Yoshikata, leader of Kōga-ryū hired Sugitani Zenjūbō to assassinate Lord Oda Nobunaga, one of Shōtei's oldest opponents. However, when Zenjūbō missed his shot, Nobunaga hid from the castle while Zenjūbō was captured and executed for his attempt. To hide his family, Yoshikata and his daughter Rokkaku Katsuhime hid them in a village in Wakasa. As a result, Shōtei lost his title as daimyō and Nobunaga held power in the area, using the Akechi clan as his vassal.[2]

During the end of Tenshō Iga War in 1581, Lord Nobunaga sought support from the people of Kōga, who served him out of obligation.[1]

The following year, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke arrived in Kōga[3] after they saved Shōtei from an ambush set by Shinbakufu member Akechi Kagemitsu, Akechi Mitsuhide's nephew.[4]

There, Naoe and Yasuke walked through the abandoned region and heard noise coming from one of the huts. Inside, they found Shōtei drunk and babbling about his loss to Nobunaga and how the Akechi clan robbed him of his chance to kill Nobunaga. However, they all soon came under attack by Akechi soldiers. While Shōtei became drunkenly unconscious, Naoe and Yasuke fought and defeated the Akechi warriors.[3]

With Shōtei regaining consciousness, he admitted to them that he did not know a way into Sakamoto Castle. When Naoe and Yasuke almost left, Shōtei admitted that his daughter Katsuhime may know how to infiltrate the castle and her location at Enryakuji.[3] After gaining Katsuhime's and Shōtei's aid, they all planned and executed an attack on Sakamoto Castle, successfully defeating Kagemitsu.[5]

After the assault, Shōtei later met and tasked Naoe and Yasuke to find and stop his former students, the Godai Shinobi.[6] After dealing with the Godai Shinobi, they returned to Kōga and discussed their mission fulfilled with Shōtei. As a response, Shōtei gifted them a trinket Soaring Tatsu and informed them that he intended to serve as an advisor to Lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi going forward.[7]

While visiting Kōga, both Naoe and Yasuke established a kakurega within the area.[8]
