Unkai (died 1582) was a Japanese warrior and former monk who lived in the Yamato Province during the late Sengoku period.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1582, Unkai used to work at Ōminesan-ji as its monk when it was used as a temple. However, when the host Gyoji initiated an arena, Unkai soon joined the arena and became its undefeated champion. As his wins grew, he was soon joined by fellow competitors Masago, Suguru, Hokuto, and O-Sen and they soon controlled the arena to kill any competitors. To stop their bloodshed, the host Gyoji sought help from the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke to rid them from his arena.[1]
When Naoe and Yasuke arrived and joined the competition, Unkai watched as his competitors fall to the newest challengers. Unkai, drunk on his sake, faced off against them but was soon defeated and killed, freeing Gyoji and his tournament from his control. Before leaving, they recovered a naginata Vengeful Foe from Unkai's personal effects.[1]
