Mamushi (羅覚; died 1582) was a Japanese monk who lived in the Yamashiro Province during the late Sengoku period.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 1582, Mamushi worked as a monk-turned-demon hunter at Nyoiji Daiji Temple where locals came all over to tell him to investigate "supernatural" claims of the yōkai. However, nearly all of the claims were exaggerated or ridiculous, leading him to hate his newfound responsibility. At one point, he was visited by the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and revealed his frustrations of these myths. Wanting to help, they agreed to investigate these claims themselves, easing his burden.[1]

After they investigated all of the claims, Naoe and Yasuke returned to the temple to inform Mamushi. However, the temple was silent while they entered to find Mamushi lifeless on the floor. In front of them, they caught sight of the woman they saved in Tamba earlier. However, she turned around and revealed her true nature as one of the yōkai, an Ao Andon. Fighting the creature, they bested the yōkai in combat but the Ao Andon's body dissipated upon their defeat.[1]
