The Battle of Yamazaki took place at Yamazaki, Japan in 2 July 1582 during the late Sengoku period. It was fought between the forces led by former Oda retainer and general Hashiba Hideyoshi, aided by the Kakushiba ikki, and Akechi Mitsuhide, leader of the Akechi clan and Shinbakufu member, and his forces.
Prelude[edit | edit source]
On 21 June 1582, Oda Nobunaga had committed suicide at Honnō-ji after Akechi Mitsuhide betrayed and successfully attacked the temple.[1] However, the Igan kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe and former Oda retainer Yasuke later joined forces as they sought Mitsuhide and his allies in the secret collective, the Shinbakufu, for the part of her father's death[2] and Nobunaga's death, respectively.[1] They later established their Kakushiba ikki[3] and within two weeks, they subsequently hunted down nearly all the remaining Shinbakufu members successfully.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10]
The Battle[edit | edit source]
On 1 July 1582, Naoe and Yasuke met with Hashiba Hideyoshi's wife and ally, Nene, who informed to meet her husband at the battlegrounds where he planned to siege Shōryū-ji Castle.[11] Within the next day, they met with Hideyoshi and informed him that they would aid in his attack while they planned to confront Mitsuhide alone during the battle.[12]
Hideyoshi soon led his forces against Mitsuhide at Yamazaki and pushed him back towards Shōryū-ji Castle, where Mitsuhide gathered his remaining forces. While Hideyoshi readied his men for their assault, Mitsuhide saw no reinforcements from any allies, especially his leader Ashikaga Yoshiaki but planned to fight anyway. However, while Hideyoshi fought against Mitsuhide's forces, Mitsuhide soon left to escape until he was confronted Naoe and Yasuke. While the Akechi clan leader fled and left his soldiers to fight them, Naoe and Yasuke defeated his men and gave chase after him.[12]
With his forces dwindled, Mitsuhide arrived on the river besides the village Ōyamazaki. However, tired of running, he dismissed his soldiers before meeting Naoe and Yasuke head-on. For one last time, Mitsuhide fought against the pair and was ultimately bested. In his last breath, he admitted that his leader was the former shōgun Yoshiaki and commended Yasuke for being Nobunaga's best samurai. Before he could commit seppuku, Naoe ultimately killed him with her blade and gave him a dishonorable death. Hideyoshi later found and thanked them for their service before stating his role to follow Nobunaga's goals and leading the country towards unification.[12]
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
Naoe and Yasuke later tracked down Yoshiaki at Kuramadera Temple north of Kyoto. There, Yoshiaki returned the box with the regalia inside. To walk away with his life, he gave both of them information on the last known location of "another shadow" and the mention of the Templar Kimura Kei stationed in Kii, respectively.[13] Meanwhile, with his victory, Hideyoshi rose in power and influence and was seen as Nobunaga's successor.[14]
