The Pond Yamabushi (died 1582) was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he masqueraded as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Following the Tenshō Iga War, Lord Oda Nobunaga ordered a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi, who were to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers. However, these soldiers became more callous and warped, killing any innocents in their way.[1]
In 1582, yamabushi Genpaku met with Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these false monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by tracking and hunting down these perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead, Naoe investigated the Three-Trunked Tree in Ōmi but found no trace of the imposter. While there, she meditated and began to practice kuji-kiri but was nearly killed by the imposter.[1]
Fighting him, Naoe managed to best him and promptly killed him, ending his terror in the area. She then retrieved the ōdachi The Monk's Amendment and a letter, which dictated his numerous kills and his communication with his fellow cohort, from the imposter's personal effects before leaving.[1]
