Ohatsu

Ohatsu (お初; 1570 – 1633) was a Japanese noblewoman during the late Sengoku period. She was the middle daughter of Azai Nagamasa and Oichi, and the sister of Oeyo and Yodo-dono.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Born in 1570 to Nagamasa and Oichi, Ohatsu moved away from Odani with her family when she was three years old when her father and brother Manpukumaru was killed by Oichi's brother Oda Nobunaga in 1573.[1] Her family was then placed in the care of Nobunaga's brother-in-law, Oda Nobutada,[2] living around the castle and city of Azuchi.[3]

In 1582, Ohatsu and her sisters, along with the family servant, accompanied Oichi to the Azuchi market some time after she had retired from her position within the Shinbakufu. While Oichi made stops to pray at a nearby shrine, Ohatsu sat down on the ground with her sisters, mediating between the two when they had a short argument. This act was witnessed by the ronin Yasuke, a former retainer of Nobunaga and a friend of their mother's.[4]

Later life and death[edit | edit source]

Ohatsu later married her cousin Kyōgoku Takatsugu and, like her sisters, was active in maintaining the diplomatic relations between the Toyotomi and Tokugawa clan during the late stage of the Sengoku period. She subsequently became a nun and died childless on 30 September 1633.[1]
