Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣 秀吉; 1537 – 1598), also known as Hashiba Hideyoshi (羽柴 秀吉), was a daimyō during the Sengoku period of Japan, and the second of Japan's three great unifiers (三英傑).[1] After the Japanese Assassin Yamauchi Taka assassinated Hideyoshi's former liege Oda Nobunaga,[2] Hideyoshi managed to unify Japan under his rule, only for Taka to later kill him as well,[3] paving the way for Tokugawa Ieyasu's ascension to shōgun of Japan. After his death, the land was divided between forces loyal to the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa forces. At the Battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu defeated the Toyotomi forces under Ishida Mitsunari and inherited Hideyoshi's legacy.[1]
