Sakamoto (坂本) is a port town that was formerly part of Omi Province during the late 16th century.[1]. Today, it is part of Ōtsu, which serves as the capital city of Shiga Prefecture.[2] The town was known for the Sakamoto Castle, built by Akechi Mitsuhide following the Siege of Mount Hiei in 1571.[3]

In 1582, Fujibayashi Naoe, Yasuke, Shōtei, and his daughter Rokkaku Katsuhime traveled to Sakamoto in pursuit of the samurai Akechi Kagemitsu, Mitsuhide's nephew and a member of the Shinbakufu. Infiltrating Sakamoto Castle, which Kagemitsu used as his personal stronghold, the group successfully eliminated the samurai and his bodyguard Gamo Yoshimitsu, ending the Shinbakufu's influence in the region.[4]
