Mitsumune was a Japanese monk and a member of the Ikkō-ikki during the late 16th century.
Biography
A survivor from the war against Oda Nobunaga's army, Mitsumune led a small group of sohei from the Ishiyama Hongan-ji, continuing the sect's fight against Nobunaga's retainer Wada Koretake. While in northern Izumi Settsu, Mitsumune and his men fought in a clash against a group of bandits, who stole a prized statue of Shinran that Kyonyo had tasked him to protect. The bandits took it to the Toneyama Post Town, where they had made it their lair. Facing with exhaustion and lack of men, Mitsumune had no choice but to retreat and take shelter at the Nunobiki Falls.[1]
While taking refuge at the waterfall, Mitsumune was visited by the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe, whom Kyonyo sent to recruit to fight against Koretake's army. While Mitsumune admired Naoe's courage, he remarked that Kyonyo would not want him for he had lost the statue of Shinran that he was entrusted to protect. Seeking to gain his support, Naoe volunteered to help him recover the statue. True to her word, Naoe returned some time later with the statue in her hand. While Mitsumune was grateful for her effort, he commented that his followers would not for too much blood had been lost due to the statue. He asked that Naoe take the statue to Kyonyo, and that his group would fight alongside Kyonyo when the time comes.[1]
