Biography
As Kagemitsu's personal bodyguard, Yoshimitsu was extremely loyal to his master, such that he was given his own personal residence in Sakamoto outside the castle.[1] In 1582, Yoshimitsu accompanied Kagemitsu to Seta Bridge in Ōtsu, where his lord was scheduled to duel with Shōtei, the former daimyo southern Omi and one of the late Oda Nobunaga's persistent rivals. In reality, the duel was meant to be am ambush to rid the land of Shōtei to bring southern Omi fully under Kagmitsu's control. However, the ambush was thwarted by the timely arrival of Nobunaga's former retainer Yasuke, causing Yoshimitsu to urge his lord to retreat. Kagemitsu agreed and retreated back to the castle with Yoshimitsu.[2]
Later on, an alliance of Yasuke, Fujibayashi Naoe, Shotei and Rokkaku Katsuhime launched an attack on Sakamoto to eliminate Kagemitsu and his followers. In his own residence, Yoshimitsu was confronted by Yasuke and Shotei, with the former requesting a duel to the death with Yoshimitsu, given their respective roles as samurai. Yoshimitsu accepted and the two gathered in the courtyard, each of them declaring their oaths and proclamation. Ultimately, Yoshimitsu was bested by Yasuke and was killed in battle. His death greatly weakened the strength of Kagmitsu's forces, ultimately resulting his lord's downfall and death at the hands of the alliance.[1]
