Gamo Akihime was a Japanese woman who served as a servant to Lady Oichi during the late 16th century.
Biography
Serving Oichi since at least 1581, Akihime has accompanied her alongside bodyguard Kuma during her travels between Azuchi Castle and Odani.[1] In spring of that year, she was present when Oichi met her older brother's retainer Diogo at the castle. Oichi had requested to meet Diogo herself to personally thank him for helping an elderly servant against a group of harassing Sanada-ryu students. On Oichi's orders, Akihime present a kosode made by the elderly servant to Oichi as thanks.[2]
A year later in 1582, Akihime was also present when Diogo, now known as Yasuke after becoming a samurai, visited Oichi in Odani on the noble lady's request.[3] Following the events that took place on Chikubushima,[4] after which Oichi seemingly became depressed, Akihime wrote a letter to Yasuke at his league's hideout, writing that Oichi's spirit was "falling" and suggested he could pay her a visit at the markets in Azuchi. Yasuke responded to letter by traveling to Azuchi, finding Akihime and Oichi, much to the former's gratefulness.[5]
