Kyōgoku Maria (京極 マリア; 1543 – 1618) was a Japanese noblewoman of the Azai clan and the older sister of Azai Nagamasa.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Born to Azai Hisamasa,[1], Maria married the general Kyōgoku Takayoshi, a vassal of the Azai. In 1581, Maria and her husband converted to Christianity and were baptized in Kyoto. Takayoshi died shortly after their conversion and his remains were brought to Ōmi to be buried in a church in Azuchi. Over the next year, Maria bore witness to the chaos that unraveled after Oda Nobunaga's death during the Honnō-ji incident, with the Akechi soldiers ravaging and causing destruction in their paths.[2]

During her time at the Azuchi church, Maria encountered the shinobi Fujibayashi Naoe and ronin Yasuke and enlisted their aid to help bring an end to the lawlessness and restore peace in the region.[2]
