"Without fanfare. Without warning. Without thought. That is the essence of my style. One simple killing stroke."
―Ittōsai to Yasuke, 1582.[src]

'Itō Ittōsai Kagehisa (伊藤 一刀斎 景久; c. 1560 – 1653) was a Japanese swordsman attributed with founding Ittō-ryū school of kenjutsu.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In his early years, Ittōsai spent time honing his skill in kata around the Kansai region, basing himself near water areas such as the Tsuruga Port Overlook in Wakasa, and southeast of Shiotsu in Ōmi. At both of these locations, Ittōsai was sought out by the ronin Yasuke, who sought to learn kata from him. Ittōsai agreed to his request and bestowed his knowledge onto him.[1]
