I'm actually more unsure about calling him an Assassin b/c he quotes "We are the shadows who serve the light" with Naoe in the trailer, but the site doesn't call him one. / Btw, according to my sources on hand, a distinct concept of the samurai as a social class did not emerge until the Tokugawa era of peace. / Where's the source for him being born in Mozambique?

Yasuke was well taught in Japanese culture, as evident in his proficiency of the language and his quoting of the Japanese proverb "[[wikt:井の中の蛙大海を知らず|a frog in a well, knows nothing of the sea]]". His dark skin, a feature that impressed Oda Nobunaga, made him stand out against an otherwise Japanese citizenry. Despite following Nobunaga loyally, at some point Yasuke grew disillusioned with the cause he was fighting for.<ref name="Trailer Breakdown"/>

Described as a samurai in the marketing, the truth is a bit murkier and more nuanced. While Yasuke served Nobunaga as some form of retainer, it is unclear if the same rights and social standing were conferred upon as would be a samurai who were more a caste rather than just an occupation.

Yasuke (弥助; born c. 1555) was an African samurai and retainer of the warlord Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period of Japan. He was brought as a slave to the port city of Sakai in 1579 by the Portuguese Empire,[1][2]. According to the Chronicle of Nobunaga, he entered into the service of Oda a few years later after capturing his attention as the first African man he had ever met and impressing him with his strong stature and intelligence.[2] In 1581, he invaded Iga Province on behalf of his lord, devastating the region.[1][2] Despite destroying her home, Yasuke later allied himself with the young Iga Assassin Fujibayashi Naoe.[3]
