Yasuke (Japanese: 弥助 or 弥介) was an African servant to Oda Nobunaga near the end of the Sengoku period. Brought over by the Portuguese Empire as a slave in 1579,[1] he later attained the rank of samurai and participated in a raid against Fujibayashi Naoe's village in Iga Province, before eventually joining the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins.[2]

Behind the scenes

Yasuke is a historical figure who appears in the 2024 video game Assassin's Creed: Shadows, where he is voiced by the Zimbabwean actor Tongayi Chirisa. His character is unique in the Assassin's Creed series for being the first real person that players can control as the protagonist. This is a shift from earlier games, where players would meet renowned people as non-player characters in a protagonist's adventures as seen in every other media.
