The Rokkaku clan (六角氏, Rokkaku-shi) was a Japanese noble house founded in the 13th century that originated from the province of Ōmi, ruling over Kōga. The Rokkaku, just like their neighbors from Iga, created a confederation of shinobi families later known as the Kōka ikki and started developing what would become known as the Kōga-ryū, one of the two main ninjutsu traditions alongside the Iga-ryū.[1]
The clan's influence and power decayed rapidly after being defeated by Oda Nobunaga in 1568 and by Shibata Katsuie in 1570, with Kōga being a village in ruins by the time Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke visited it in 1582.[2] Most of the surviving members forsake the clan, such as then patriarch Rokkaku Yoshikata, who became a Buddhist monk,[2] and his son Rokkaku Yoshimitsu, who took charge of the Godai Shinobi and started working for the Shinbakufu.[3]
