Enju (died 1582), also known as The Teppo Smuggler, was a Japanese smuggler and a member of a Tamba silver-smuggling ring during the 16th century.

Biography

By 1582, Enju was part of the Akechi clan who joined a silver-smuggling operation under the leader Mai. Stationed at Yakami Castle, Enju sold his supply of teppō to any outlaw willing to meet his price. He sent a message to his fellow cohort Fernam Moreno to discuss further business plans to increase their profit.[1]

However, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke met with Lord Hosokawa Fujitaka, who tasked the duo to stop the silver-smuggling ring within his court. Following a note from Fernam Moreno's personal effects, they encountered Enju selling his wares at Yakami Castle. There, they assassinated Enju and acquired a teppō, Mai's Warning, from his personal effects.[1]
