Yasuke (弥助; born c. 1555) was an African samurai and retainer of the warlord Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period of Japan. He was brought as a slave to the port city of Sakai in 1579 by the Portuguese Empire,[1][2]. According to the Chronicle of Nobunaga, he entered into the service of Oda a few years later after capturing his attention as the first African man he had ever met and impressing him with his strong stature and intelligence.[2] In 1581, he invaded Iga Province on behalf of his lord, devastating the region.[1][2] Despite destroying her home, Yasuke later allied himself with the young Iga Assassin Fujibayashi Naoe.[3]
