Yasuke (弥助; born c. 1555) was an African retainer of the warlord Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period of Japan. Brought to Japan as a slave by the Portuguese Empire in 1579,[1] he entered into the service of Oda Nobunaga after capturing his attention and favour. In 1581, he participated in an attack on Iga. Later on, he became a member of the Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins and an ally of the young Assassin Fujibayashi Naoe, despite the initial enmity she had borne towards him for devastating her home.[2]
Personality and traits
Yasuke was well taught in Japanese culture, as evident in his proficiency of the language and his quoting of the Japanese proverb "a frog in a well, knows nothing of the sea". His dark skin, a feature that impressed Oda Nobunaga, made him stand out against an otherwise Japanese citizenry. Despite following Nobunaga loyally, at some point Yasuke grew disillusioned with the cause he was fighting for.[1]
Equipment and skills
Yasuke was also a strong individual and skilled in the use of many weapons, such as katanas, kanabō,[1] and arquebus rifles.[3] Yasuke was able to take out several Iga soldiers with ease.[1]
Behind the scenes
Yasuke is a historical figure and character who will appear in the 2024 video game Assassin's Creed: Shadows, where he is being portrayed by the Zimbabwean actor Tongayi Chirisa. His character is unique in the Assassin's Creed series for being the first real individual that players can control as a main protagonist.
Described as a samurai in the marketing, the truth is a bit murkier and more nuanced. While Yasuke served Nobunaga as some form of retainer, it is unclear if the same rights and social standing were conferred upon as would be a samurai who were more a caste rather than just an occupation.
