The Pathway Yamabushi (died 1582) was a Japanese soldier who served under Oda Nobunaga. Along with eight fellow soldiers, he posed himself as a yamabushi during the late Sengoku period.
Biography
After the Tenshō Iga War, Lord Nobunaga created a group of nine soldiers to dress and patrol as yamabushi. Their objective was to locate and kill any remaining Igan soldiers who survived the war. However, these soldiers became more disoriented and murderous, killing any civilians in their path.[1]
In 1582, yamabushi Genpaku spoke with Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke about these imposter monks. Naoe and Yasuke agreed to help by tracking and hunting down these perpetrators. Following Genpaku's lead, they investigated the Kumano Sanzan in Kii and found a yamabushi patrolling around Shingū. Realizing he held a weapon, they confronted him and promptly assassinated him. They then retrieved the naginata Izanagi's Reach from the imposter's personal effects.[1]
