Can't recall if Tokubei actually accepted money, or if he only knows a bribe was made to another person. Thugs want money, unrelated to him fleeing castle

Suzu was a Japanese woman and the wife of Commander Tokubei in the Harima Province during the late Sengoku period.

Biography

Suzu was married to Tokubei, a commander in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's army, but also knew of his gambling addiction and numerous debts. Wary of his habits, in late June 1582, she later found a shrine fortune among his belongings. Soon after, a group of bandits attacked Suzu at home and interrogated her for Tokubei's location, seeking to assault him for failing to pay his debts. Fortunately, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke came and defeated the attackers, saving Suzu. They also inquired after her husband,[1] as he had suspiciously fled the night prior from a rōnin attack on Himeji Castle, where he was stationed as its ranking commander.[2] Talking with the pair, she gave them the shrine fortune to return and told them that Tokubei might be gambling in town at the Himeji Guild Storage.[1]
