They call me many things: Murderer. Cutthroat. Thief. But you may call me Suika no Bakemono.

This article is about a subject that lacks an official name and is known only by its nickname, title, or alias.

"Suika no Bakemono" was the name imposed on a Japanese farmer who lived at Suika Lands in Izumi Settsu during the late Sengoku period. He regularly debated and sparred with another local farmer in disagreement over whose favorite melon was better. Together, their actions led many people to purport that a yōkai known as the Suika no Bakemono (西瓜の化物, lit. 'watermelon warrior') existed in the region.[1]

Biography

The locals of Izumi Settsu heard the commotion and fighting noises from this "melon" yōkai presiding in the Suika Lands, which led them to travel to the monk-turned-demon hunter Mamushi to voice their concerns. The monk chalked these notions of "bakemonos" as exaggerations yet reluctantly agreed to investigate the claims.[1]

In 1582, Mamushi met the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke and asked them to investigate all the purported sightings of yōkai. During their investigation in Settsu, Naoe and Yasuke arrived at the farmland and discovered both melon "yōkai" sparring aggressively with each other. Confronting the men, they were asked about which melon they preferred. Answering the question, they soon fought the opposing farmer and bested them to honor the new "melon lord" of the season.[1]

Behind the scenes

Regardless of the choice, either farmer will duel the player if they choose suika or makuwauri as their favored melon.[1]
