An Ao Andon (青行燈), also known as Aoandon, is a yōkai born from the fear of all mortals.[1] Their title translates to the "blue lantern" or "blue light."

Mythology

The Ao Andon are described as having the appearance of demonic women with blue skin, two horns atop their heads, and sharp teeth.[2]

History

In 1582, the yōkai, disguised as a woman named Chitose, was on a task to meet and claim the soul of Mamushi, a monk-turned-demon hunter, for his disbelief of their kind.[1]

During their travels, the Ao Andon came across a deranged and beastly monk in Kabasaka Village, Tamba. While under the guise of Chitose, she and other villagers were held hostage by the monk, whose appearance and behavior led people to mistake him for the yōkai known as the Taka Nyudo. The monk was soon defeated by the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke, who were tasked by Mamushi to investigate various yōkai claims. Chitose thanked them for their aid and left the village after stating her intent to meet Mamushi to tell him a "tale of her own."[1]

At Nyoiji Daiji Temple, the Ao Andon revealed their true form to Mamushi and confronted him. Taking the monk's life, the Ao Andon was soon found by Naoe and Yasuke, who were shocked to come face-to-face with a real yōkai. As the Ao Andon closed the temple's door, they told Naoe and Yasuke how they had made Mamushi believe in their kind before killing him. They then appeared outside the temple and attacked the pair, though they were ultimately defeated and dissipated in blue smoke.[1]

Personality and traits

In their human disguise as the poet Chitose, the yōkai appeared a shy, timid, but cryptic woman. In their true form, the Ao Andon appeared with their characteristic blue complexion, dark forehead markings, twin horns, and sharp teeth. Along with their warped voice, they had the ability of telekinesis, superhuman strength, and wielded dual tantōs as their main weapons.[1]
