Mibuno Vale was a forested valley in the northeast of Iga Province, Japan, during the Sengoku period. The area was known for the Mibuno Castle that served as a stronghold of the Iga ikki, and was also home to the Fujibayashi clan during the 16th century.

History

The Iga jōnin Fujibayashi Masayasu—later known as Nagato—grew up a farmer in a village in Mibuno Vale, where he dreamed of becoming a shinobi so he could protect his people from the violence and wars plaguing the region. In 1560, after meeting the shinobi Momochi Sandayu and his apprentice, Hattori Hanzō, Masayasu proved his devotion and skills during a sparring match with the latter, impressing Sandayu, who invited him to become his pupil and train alongside Hanzō. Accepting, Masayasu bid farewell to his parents and fellow villagers and left his home to commence his shinobi training.[1]

Years later, Nagato and his wife Tsuyu settled down in Mibuno Vale, where they raised their daughter Naoe while forsaking their duties to the Kakushiba ikki. Following Tsuyu's disappearance and presumed death, Nagato hid the jewel Yasakani no Magatama—one of the Imperial Regalia of Japan—that Tsuyu had entrusted to him in the Mihata Kofun.[2] He then focused on raising Naoe with the help of the elderly farmer Matsu,[3] and later began training her as a shinobi alongside Sandayu.[4][5]

During the Tenshō Iga War, Mibuno Vale came under threat of invasion by the Oda clan. While the first assault in October 1579, led by Oda Nobukatsu, was repelled by the Iga ikki,[6] Oda Nobunaga personally led a second invasion in September 1581, which proved more successful, resulting in the entirety of Iga Province coming under his rule.[7] During the invasion, Mibuno Vale was razed by the Oda forces,[8][9] and Mibuno Castle fell to the invaders,[10] where Nobunaga's samurai Yasuke fought and killed Momochi Sandayu.[11]

In 1582, Naoe returned to Mibuno Vale, which remained devastated after the invasion that had taken place nearly a year prior. She visited the burnt remains of her former home and reunited with Matsu, who had assumed her to be dead. As the two reconnected, Naoe helped Matsu search for a new home, since her previous house had been destroyed in the war.[12]

At some point, Naoe and Yasuke, who had become allies and started a new incarnation of the Kakushiba ikki together, established a kakurega in the valley, near Mibuno Castle. They also infiltrated the castle, now occupied by Oda clan troops, and looted its treasure chest.[13]
