From the Ashes was a virtual representation of one of Fujibayashi Naoe's genetic memories, relived through the Animus EGO.[1]
Description[edit | edit source]
Naoe returns to Iga after more than half a year since Oda Nobunaga's invasion.
Dialogue[edit | edit source]
Naoe entered the region of Mibuno Vale, where she had lived.
- Naoe: It's bittersweet being back here.
She inspected the surroundings and reflected on her upbringing.
- Naoe: It feels like yesterday I was a little girl. Running around without a care. I hated waking up so early to train. But now I'd give anything to be woken up by Father. I'll carry this sight with me until I did. Or until those responsible are dead.
(sighs) Iga. You'll always be home to me. Even like this.
Naoe headed to her old home, passing by a pair of fieldworkers.
- Fieldworker 1: Fujibayashi Nagato. I can't believe he is gone.
- Fieldworker 2: His house should never be rebuilt. To remind us of what is lost.
- Fieldworker 1: Shh! I think that's his daughter.
Naoe ignored their remarks and reacher her former home, which had been damaged during the war and was now left abandoned. Inside, she found a clean Futon along with a scroll beside it.
- Naoe: Someone has been sleeping here.
She picked up the scroll and read the contents inside.
A Letter from Matsu
- My dearest Naoe,
If you are reading this then please forgive me, for I have given up hope for your return and have ventured up the mountain for good.
There is no use for these old bones anymore. I will say my final prayers at the nearby shrine before my journey. Helping raise you was one of the greatest joys of my life. I am so proud of you. Your mother would have been proud of you too.
- Your Auntie Matsu
- Naoe: (gasps) It's from Matsu! I'm coming, Auntie Matsu. Hang on! You better still be alive!
Naoe left the house and hurriedly made her way to the Nabari Wilds in the south of Iga. In the western part of the forest, Naoe managed to find Matsu praying at the Hinotani Shrine.
- Matsu: I am no longer of use. Please, give me the strength to die in peace. I am so tired. Please! Guide my steps to my final resting place. And protect my remains from the evil that lurks in these mountains.
Naoe approached her from behind.
- Naoe: Auntie Matsu!
- Matsu: (gasps) It can't be!
Matsu turned around and was surprised to find Naoe still alive.
- Naoe: It's me. I'm home.
- Matsu: Oh! Oh, Naoe!
The elderly woman embraced and gave her a hug.
- Matsu: How did you find me? I'd lost hope.
- Naoe: I came home and found a letter. Your letter. I came as fast as I could.
- Matsu: You resourceful girl. Oh, to see that face again.
It tells the story of many battles. Much has changed since I last saw you. - Naoe: It doesn't matter now. All I know is how happy I am to see you again.
- Matsu: That scar would say otherwise.
- Naoe: It's healed, and I'm back in Iga.
- Matsu: Yes, you are here now. I had hoped you would one day return.
- Naoe: I told you, Auntie. As long as you're around, I will take care of you. First? Finding you somewhere nicer to sleep.
- Matsu: A roof would be nice. Too many bugs up my kosode. Ah! I remember a small cabin. I spent many summers there as a girl, next to a roaring waterfall. That is where I wish to spend my final days. We must be careful. There's rumor of evil haunting those woods now. Mountain-worshiping monks who kill anyone passing through.
- Naoe: You stay here. I'll go see if it's safe to spend the night, and then we will go together.
- Matsu: How glad I am to hear you say that. "Together."
Outcome[edit | edit source]
Naoe returned to Iga and managed to reunite with Matsu before she had fully retired to the mountains to spend her final days. Naoe sets out to help Matsu check and clear the mountain cabin of any possible danger.
