Hatakeyama Yoshimasa (畠山 義正) was a Japanese samurai who lived in Kyoto during the late Sengoku period.
Biography[edit | edit source]
A member of the famed Hatakeyama clan from Yamashiro,[1] Yoshimasa had, like many other samurai, garnered a long-standing bitterness and reputation from the locals. After the Honnō-ji incident in June 1582 that saw the death of Oda Nobunaga, the city was thrown into chaos, which emboldened outlaws to commit crimes and attack civilians in the province.[2]
Some time after the incident, Yoshimasa encountered the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe and Nobunaga's former retainer Yasuke. Given his reputation, Yoshimasa felt he could not personally deal with the bandits in Yamashiro, as the people might perceive this as him imposing order upon the locals. Thus, he enlisted Naoe and Yasuke's help to eliminate the outlaws plaguing the province. The pair accepted, and Yoshimasa rewarded them with money and resources for their trouble.[2]
