Genzaburo (died 1582) was a Japanese military commander who served the Bessho clan, in particular Bessho Harumasa.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1582, following Bessho Harumasa's death, and after learning of Koshiro's part in his downfall,[1] Genzaburo ordered his remaining unit to assassinate Koshiro at Kyokaiji Temple. However, his unit failed in their task and split apart as they awaited their next orders. Meanwhile, the Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe met with Koshiro and promised to deal with the assassins who had tried to kill him.[2]
Genzaburo stationed himself at Zuiganji Temple alone while corresponding with his men through letters. Eventually, Genzaburo's entire unit fell to Naoe, who later found his location after speaking with Koshiro. At the temple, Genzaburo received Naoe and spoke to her about his unit's callous methods and his unwavering devotion to Harumasa.[2]
After Naoe and Genzaburo spoke, they engaged each other in a duel, resulting in the latter's death. Naoe later found that Koshiro had also arrived at the temple and told him not to risk his life again for her sake. Before leaving, she retrieved the ōdachi Tactician's Steel from Genzaburo's personal effects.[2]
