Eamon Hathaway (died 1580s) was an English Templar active during the 16th century. Having held the position of Black Cross, Eamon was appointed by the Inner Sanctum[2] to serve as the Order's enforcer against corruption from within as well as to help search for Isu sites and artifacts across the world.[3]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Life as a Black Cross[edit | edit source]

On 4 March 1552, Eamon Hathaway was bestowed by the Inner Sanctum with the honor of becoming a Black Cross. His father gave him the family sword before entrusting a mission he could not complete: finding The Observatory. With this task at hand, he praised the Father of Understanding and vowed to discover the secrets of "Those Who Came Before."[4]

For the next three years, Eamon spent his time traveling the world, taking him to locations such as the Isle of Skye, the Ionian Islands in Greece, and Marrakech. Despite finding some Pieces of Eden at each location and evidence of a woman Kassandra he learned about, he saw that she had left these pieces completely depowered or taken them. He believed that they were left there recently and theorized that she might be alive, but could not prove it.[4]

Within a decade more of his mission, Eamon soon joined his fellow British Templars on an incursion in Java. Coming across a local village, the Templars burned it down. However, a young girl Nirmala soon attacked and killed two Order guards before being subdued. Impressed with her skill, Eamon offered Nirmala a place by his side, to which she accepted. Through time, she was recruited into the Order.[5]

On 13 November 1578, Eamon and Nirmala infiltrated the Beijing Synod where he caught sight of the Chinese Mentor Shao Jun, but could not kill her. While there, they overheard a scholar speak with Jun about a possible "temple" in Japan. With his mission possibly nearing his end, he acquired the scholar's notes while Nirmala killed the man. After some years mentoring Nirmala, the Inner Sanctum granted a promotion to Nirmala as a fellow Black Cross.[4]

Mission to Japan[edit | edit source]

While traveling to Japan, Eamon also learned[6] that Templars Nuno Caro and Duarte de Melo fell to the Oda Nobunaga's former samurai "Diogo" and his ally Fujibayashi Naoe.[7][8] He and Nirmala made their way to Macau before finding passage with a drunkard Chinese sailor Yang.[6]

Within more than two months, Eamon and Nirmala safeguarded the ship, even completely killing an ambush of pirates. However, upon arriving to Japan, Yang crashed his ship on an unmarked reef on the shores of Iseji Trails in Kii. Despite losing their notes and items, both Black Crosses continued their investigation for the hidden temple. [4] Making their way to Yuasa, Eamon soon questioned the citizens and that matched the markings he learned from the scholar.[6]

However, Eamon's presence soon caught the attention of Naoe and Yasuke, formerly Diogo. While in Yuasa, he entertained the people and their kids of his journey and how he faced off against different creatures, such as the bear, jaguar, and even an elephant. Showing the kids his carvings during his stories, he was then confronted by Naoe and Yasuke, who saw his Templar pendant. After the story, he introduced himself and how he knew of them. While stating that he was tasked for their deaths, he offered a compromise: leave him alone while he tracked down a more important lead. However, Naoe and Yasuke rejected the offer and started their own investigation.[6] In his investigation, Eamon soon came across Kane and Kinu, who unintentionally informed them of the door in Wakasa, the riddle scrolls, and how Yasuke carried the keystone.[4]

Realizing that they were being investigated themselves, Eamon and Nirmala kept an eye on Naoe and Yasuke, whom Yang informed of his destroyed ship at the shores of Iseji Trails. Thus, they followed the pair to the shores, where he saw Nirmala engage Yasuke alone while Naoe dived in the waters for further clues. Although Nirmala was nearly bested, Eamon joined his student against Yasuke. Together, they left Yasuke bleeding on the shore after taking the keystone from his personal effects.[4]

Death[edit | edit source]

In southern Wakasa, Eamon and Nirmala entered into the cave and investigated the vault, while unaware of Naoe and fellow Kakushiba ikki member Rufino followed them. Eamon later inspected further the vault while Nirmala caught sight of and engaged with Naoe and Rufino. Within the vault, Eamon discovered that it was actually a Seismic Temple, angering him further that it was not the Observatory. Hearing Nirmala calling for help against Naoe, he came to her and disclosed his findings before joining her to fight Naoe.[1]

Besting Naoe together, Eamon and Nirmala disarmed her while Eamon readied to execute her. Fortunately, Yasuke came and rushed Eamon, pushing him down. Surprised, Nirmala nearly killed Naoe but was shot by Rufino. Caught off-guard for a moment, Nirmala was then killed by Naoe with her hidden blade, much to Eamon's shock. Holding Nirmala close, Eamon knelt besides her in her last moments before donning his helm and engaging Naoe and Yasuke. Yet, Eamon was bested but gave final rites to Nirmala. He disclosed that despite of his loss, Naoe knew nothing of the world and the war she stepped into before succumbing to his wounds. Naoe, Yasuke, and Rufino left the temple undisturbed while Yasuke recovered Eamon's helm and his tunic from his personal effects. Before leaving the site, Yasuke destroyed the keystone, locking the temple for all, including the Templars.[1]
