The Tsutsui clan (筒井氏, Tsutsui-shi) was a Japanese clan that held power in the Yamato Province during the Sengoku period.

By the 16th century, taking their name from their castle, the Tsutsui were once strong warriors who defended Kōfuku-ji temple. However, through time, they emanicipated themselves and slowly became one of the powerful clans in Yamato.[1]

In 1565, led by Tsutsui Junkei, the clan became embroiled in a rivalry with Matsunaga Hisahide, who overtook the castle. Yet, when Junkei allied himself with Oda Nobunaga, they retook back their castle. For more than a decade, the Tsutsui clan fought alongside Oda clan, especially during the Ishiyama Hongan-ji War and the Tenshō Iga War. In 1578, Nobunaga named Junkei the daimyō of Yamato. As a result, they moved their clan and built Kōriyama Castle as their new base.[1]

Negotiations with the Akiyama clan[edit | edit source]

In 1582, Junkei was in negotiations for peace with the Akiyama clan and their matriarch Akiyama Ayako.[2] They later agreed of having Abbot Joken Hokkyō be their mediator. Unfortunately, Tsutsui's peace envoys turned up missing, leading Junkei to accuse Ayako of starting a war. Coincidentally, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke came and investigated the matter to ensure peace between the clans.[2]

From their findings, Naoe and Yasuke discovered a darker conspiracy, perpertuated by the secret collective, the Shinbakufu,[3] with the aid of a secret group, the Kurai Eikyou.[4] From their investigation, they later recovered a holy script taken by rogue Akiyama soldiers,[5] rescued the remaining Tsutsui envoy, and delivered the peace talks invitation to Ayako.[3]. They also found and killed a duplicitious agent within the clan's stronghold at Kōriyama Castle.[4]

Siding with Hideyoshi[edit | edit source]

After the Battle of Yamazaki, Junkei later sided with Hideyoshi and in 1584, he even aided the lord in the Battle of Komaki against Tokugawa Ieyasu. However, Junkei soon fell ill and died after the battle.[1]
