Akane (died 1582), also known as The Poisoner, was a Japanese kunoichi who was secretly part of former Bessho clan Commander Genzaburo's unit.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1582, after learning of Koshiro's involvement in the downfall and death of Bessho Harumasa,[1] Genzaburo ordered Akane and the rest of his unit to kill Koshiro at Kyokaiji Temple. After they failed to eliminate him, the unit's members split apart and awaited their next orders. Meanwhile, the Kakushiba ikki member Fujibayashi Naoe met with Koshiro and promised to hunt down the assassins who had tried to kill him.[2]
Akane soon followed her next directive to eliminate a target in Osaka. However, she was oblivious to Genzaburo's intentions to kill her and cut a loose end. Naoe eventually located Akane within the Osaka Castle's grounds at the Nishinomaru Garden, where the latter played her biwa in front of a crowd. After assassinating Akane, Naoe retrieved a letter, in which Akane asked Genzaburo for permission to kill Koshiro herself. She also recovered the bow The Poisoner's Message from her personal effects.[2]
