"You think this frightens me? I've had sharper knives at my throat, and they demanded my silence. Ask anything else. my favorite drink. Or how many koku of rice your kind can fetch."
―Samemaru's final words before being slain by Yasuke, 1582.[src]-[m]

Samemaru (died 1582) was a Japanese pirate and slaver who operated in the Wakasa Province during the late 16th century.

Biography

Operations in Wakasa

Part of an alliance of pirates that dominated Wakasa Bay, Samemaru worked alongside the Shinbakufu member Takeda Motoaki in his schemes to massacre the Niwa clan in both Obama[1] and Tsuruga.[2] Samemaru was also an ally to the Portuguese Templar Duarte de Melo and aided in his slave trade operations in Japan.[3]

Death

Samemaru's affiliation with Motoaki eventually made him notorious in Wakasa, leading to a bounty being placed on his head. One evening, after being spotted in the markets of Obama, he was confronted by a group of Ashigaru soldiers and ran away. Although he managed to escape his pursuers, he was soon approached by the samurai and Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke, who had heard of his slavery business.[4]

During their confrontation, Samemaru taunted Yasuke, having heard about him from Duarte, and fought the samurai. However, he was eventually bested and then interrogated for information on Duarte's whereabouts. Refusing to disclose anything, Samemaru made a snide remark at Yasuke before the samurai finished him off.[4]
