Duarte de Melo (died 1582) was a Portuguese slaver and a member of the Portuguese Rite of the Templar Order. He joined fellow Templar Nuno Caro, who planned to use and to exploit the resources and commerce of Japan, to build a newfound rite for the Templars.

Biography

The Templars' ventures for Japan

Under the orders of the Inner Sanctum, de Melo followed Caro's mission to Japan to search for any artifacts. For the next twenty years, both Templars discovered different types of artifacts and treasures, especially the Imperial Regalia, which they saw their counterparts, the Kakushiba ikki, fight and die to protect. Duarte and Nuno discussed about how they will continue to convince the Inner Sanctum to continue their mission. Nuno assured him that their progress in Japan will give more promise and commerce for the Templar Order. Needing allies, they convinced the deposed Ashikaga shōgun Yoshiaki, who founded the secret organization, the Shinbakufu, to offer up the Regalia in exchange for his return to power.[1]

As a result, the Kakushiba ikki had nearly been decimated after their incursions against the Shinbakufu for the Regalia. However, Duarte brought up the problem of Lord Oda Nobunaga and his mission to unify all of Japan. Caro reassured him that one of Nobunaga's men, Akechi Mitsuhide, is already under his influence to go against him. de Melo then proceeded with Caro's vision as Caro stated that while the Japanese clans' divisions run further, their plan will grow closer to completion.[1]

One rainy voyage

Alongside Nuno, Duarte sailed on one of their voyages alongside the coast of Japan per their usual business. However, he caught sight of two slaves, Diogo and his mother, handling Templar documents. Snatching the documents from the enslaved woman's hands, he called out for Caro. When Caro and his men walked into his quarters, de Melo showed him the documents. When Caro looked at them, he gave a slight signal to Duarte, who laughed happily. While Duarte and Caro's men dragged Diogo and his mother to the deck, Duarte then punched Diogo to the floor and stood on him. Caro asked them who they were helping and when Diogo denied any wrongdoing, Caro killed his mother.[2]

Before Caro could kill Diogo, an Assassin revealed himself and started to take down Caro's men. While the Assassin killed most of the men, he was soon stabbed by Duarte. Near death, the Assassin yelled at Diogo to go before being slain by de Melo. Diogo escaped with his mother's necklace by jumping aboard but not before being shot by Caro.[2]

Business in Wakasa and death

By 1582, Duarte was conducting his slavery affairs in Obama, Wakasa, especially with the pirate Samemaru. However, Samemaru's rumored affliation with Shinbakufu member Takeda Motoaki, also known as the Performer, led him to be targeted by the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke. When Yasuke chased down and fought the pirate, Samemaru slipped Duarte's name in front of him. However, once Samemaru was defeated, he stayed silent of de Melo's location and Yasuke killed him swiftly.[3]

During his investigation for Duarte, Yasuke sleuthed around the Trading Port in Obama and found Duarte's instructions to Samemaru to light three beacons around the port as a signal for him to come ashore. After lighting the three signals,[4] Yasuke waited till nightfall and then found Duarte's men. After dealing them, he found a note of a boatman for Duarte. Locating the boatman, he demanded to be taken to Duarte. When the sun began to rise, he climbed aboard, only to see de Melo torture and then kill one of his slaves. Duarte soon looked upon Yasuke and remembered him. When Yasuke demanded for Caro's location, Duarte grinned and declined. Angrily, Yasuke engaged Duarte in a fight and ultimately bested him.[5]

Asking for Caro again, Yasuke received no answer while Duarte kept insulting his need for vengeance and calling him "no one." Momentarily, Duarte was released but soon spoke ill of Yasuke's mother. Pulling out a knife, Duarte tried to stab Yasuke but the samurai quickly slayed Duarte before he could act. Before leaving the ship, Yasuke recovered a note in Portuguese from Duarte's personal effects about the Templars and headed to Kyoto, Yamashiro to speak with his old friend, Father Luís Fróis, to help translate it.[5]

Personality and traits

Duarte de Melo was a cruel and remorseless man, whose lack of human compassion stemmed from his bigotry and his depraved moral compass. When he offered to kill Oda Nobunaga himself, he proclaimed that he had not claimed a "daimyō's tongue" yet. In combat, de Melo used a Carracks black sword as his main weapon and a pistol as his secondary weapon.[6]
