Kaji (died 1582), also known as the Godai of Fire, was a Japanese shinobi and former student of the Rokkaku clan's patriarch, Rokkaku Yoshikata.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Originally part of an elite class of the Kōga-ryū ninjutsu school, Kaji and his fellow shinobi left their master Yoshikata after the downfall of the Kōga-ryū and the Rokkaku clan. Under the leadership of Rokkaku Yoshimitsu, son of Yoshikata, the group came to be known as the Godai Shinobi and forged an alliance with the Shinbakufu, who tasked them to kill the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe, Yasuke, and Rokkaku Katsuhime.[1]

In 1582, after the Kakushiba ikki helped him eliminate the Shinbakufu member Akechi Kagemitsu, Yoshikata gave Naoe a list of his fallen students who were wreaking havoc across Japan, trusting her to put a stop to their activities.[2]

Following a clue about Kaji's location being near a burning pagoda, the Kakushiba ikki members traveled to Hiei Foothill. There, they talked with a terrified man, who told them about a "fire demon" near the pagoda uphill. Finding the pagoda aflame, Naoe and Yasuke discovered Kaji to be responsible and promptly assassinated him. They then acquired the tantō Cindersteel from Kaji's personal effects.[1]
