Mount Hiei (比叡山, Hiei-zan) is a mountain to the northeast of Kyoto, Japan.[1] When Emperor Kanmu had Kyoto built, Mount Hiei was home to the Buddhist temple of Enryaku-ji, which was considered able to counteract negative influences on the capital. Over time, the complex grew to almost 3,000 temples by the 1560s.[2] In 1571, Oda Nobunaga's army razed the compound, killing everyone they could find and burning down all but one building which they had overlooked.[3] A number of the buildings on Mount Hiei were rebuilt through the first half of the 17th century[4] and still stand today.[2]
