Naoe performing a kuji-kiri

Kuji-kiri (九字切り), a form of kuji-in (九字印), is a related practice of making nine cuts or words in the air or on paper with a brush.[1] Also known as the the Kuji Goshin-ho ("Nine character defense rite"), the practice calls for the safety of the performer. First developed by Shingon and Shugendō Buddhists, it was later adopted by shinobi.[2]

By 1582, Igan shinobi Fujibayashi Naoe learned the technique from her father Nagato as a means to process her fear and trauma.[2][3] While traveling across Japan, Naoe practiced her technique at different locations,[4][5] in order to develop her own state of flow and be free from the world's disruptions.[2]
