Kamon (家紋), also known as mon, are Japanese emblems that decorate and identify an individual, a family, or clan.[1] During the Sengoku period, many clans and movements had crests with their respective emblems imprinted on them.[2]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1582, the former Oda samurai Yasuke met with Oda Nobunaga's former scribe Ota Gyuichi, who asked for Yasuke's help to recover kamon from multiple clans to aid in his historical notes and efforts. Thus, Yasuke agreed to assist and collected nine crests from across the country, such as the ones from the Akechi clan, Bessho clan, Niwa clan, Hashiba clan, Akiyama clan, Ikkō-ikki, Oda clan, Shibata Clan, and Tsutsui clan. Returning back to Gyuichi, Yasuke gave him all the crests and received gratitude for his help. As a reward, Gyuichi gifted Yasuke the Falcon's Eye bow.[2]
