Shibata Katsuie
Shibata Katsuie (柴田 勝家, died 1583), also known as Gonruku (権六), was a Japanese samurai and daimyō who was one of Oda Nobunaga's most powerful generals during the late Sengoku period. She was the second husband of Oichi, Nobunaga's sister, and remained married to her until their deaths at Kitanosho Castle.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In his early life, he began his service under the Oda clan, first serving Oda Nobuyuki around 1551. However, Nobuyuki soon died after being killed by his brother Nobunaga.[1] However, he spared Katsuie, and in 1560, he later joined Nobunaga's service.[2]
As one of Nobunaga's generals,[2] Katsuie led victorious campaigns against the Rokkaku clan under Rokkaku Yoshikata in 1570[3] and against the Azai clan and Asakura clan in 1573. As a reward for the latter, he received Kitanosho Castle and was tasked to administer over the region.[2] He was later married to the widow of Azai Nagamasa, Oichi, sister to Nobunaga, after his demise in 1573.[4]
In 1575, Katsuie continued his campaign to pacify the provinces Echizen, Etchū, and Noto. Yet, he met opposition from warlord Uesugi Kenshin in Echigo. For multiple years, he fought against Uesugi clan even after the sudden demise of Nobunaga by the hands of Akechi Mitsuhide.[2][5] However, Mitsuhide's attempt to rule also ended when he perished at the Battle of Yamazaki.[6]
Later life and death[edit | edit source]
With this, the line of succession came into question, with Hashiba Hideyoshi advocating for himself with Oda Nobukatsu's support while Katsuie backed Nobunaga's son Oda Nobutaka to succeed. Within a year, both sides' relationship nearly disintegrated.[2] Preparing for battle against Hideyoshi, he constructed Genbao Castle in Wakasa as his headquarters.[7]
At the Battle of Shizugatake,[2] the two sides fought for days, but Hideyoshi came out victorious,[7] while Nobutaka was forced to commit suicide.[8] With Katsuie defeated, he traveled back to his castle, planning to commit suicide. He implored his wife Oichi and her daughters to be taken in by Hideyoshi. However, Oichi let her daughters leave while she stayed to perish with Katsuie,[4] who burnt down the castle with him and Oichi inside.[2]
