Shōryūji (勝龍寺) was a town in southern Yamashiro, Japan. Situated on the outskirts of Kyoto,[1] today the area is home to the city of Nagaokakyō in Kyoto Prefecture.[2]
History
On 21 June 1582, the Iga kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe met with Akechi Mitsuhide and his son-in-law, Ise Sadaoki, in Shōryūji ahead of their planned attack against Oda Nobunaga at Kyoto's Honnō-ji temple. Unbeknownst to Naoe, both Mitsuhide and Sadaoki were part of a secret organization called the Shinbakufu and tricked Naoe into believing Nobunaga was its leader.[3]
Two weeks later, on 2 July, Nobunaga's former general Hashiba Hideyoshi laid siege to Shōryū-ji Castle, where Mitsuhide had taken refuge while awaiting reinforcements. However, when none of his allies arrived, Mitsuhide realized the other daimyō did not support his claim to lead Japan and resolved to make a final stand.[4]
During the battle, Naoe and her fellow Kakushiba ikki member Yasuke assisted Hideyoshi's forces and infiltrated the castle to confront Mitsuhide. The daimyō merely taunted them before leaving three of his samurai to deal with the pair and allow him to escape on horseback. As Hideyoshi's army emerged victorious, Naoe and Yasuke defeated the samurai and chased Mitsuhide to the nearby Ōyamazaki Village, where they ultimately killed him, ending his efforts to take over Japan.[4]
Later, Naoe and Yasuke returned to Shōryū-ji Castle to loot its treasure chest[1] and recover one of Kanō Eitoku at the artist's own request.[5]
